Peat bogs are wetland areas composed of large portions of decaying Sphagnum moss. Though they only make up 3% of the Earth's surface, they are estimated to hold up to 30% of the world's carbon store. It takes thousands of years for these carbon stores to develop. However when peat is harvested, primarily for agricultural purposes, these vast stores of carbon are released into the atmosphere.
Peat has become a staple of the horticulture industry. Read the ingredients of any box store potting soil mix and chances are the main ingredient will be peat. It has the unique ability to hold moisture, while also providing good aeration to plants' roots. It is cheap and sterile. However, as awareness of the harm of harvesting peat moss increases, more people are looking for alternatives. In fact, the UK has planned to phase out the sale of peat by 2024. |
